Ok, slight confession: I’ve never read Moby Dick in full. I read a watered down kid’s version i
n grade 6 and maybe the first two pages of the full version, but along with that I follow this whale enthusiast named Caroline Hack on twitter and her timeline is 85% Moby Dick, so I feel like I have the gist of it.
Cetaceans in captivity is a popular and prevalent issue. It’s one people have a very immediate response to. I’ve covered it in the past. To me, the image of a whale/dolphin in an aquarium and people silhouetted against it has always been very powerful. (Shoutout to these cool pieces: fav.me/d7bgtc0 — fav.me/d8mlldb — fav.me/d4sbc3k ) Then I made the single person next to the tank be looking at their phone, ignoring the creature, and the pain it must have gone through to get there.
I remember a while ago I read a story about a wild white dolphin caught in Japan, which, instead of being killed for meat, was sold off to an aquarium.
